The American release of Persona, and its removal of such a big chunk of the game, was such a debacle that it necessitated a total restructure and new direction for AtlusвЂ™ flagship franchise. But IвЂ™ll tell you right now, itвЂ™s very rare indeed that вЂincompetencyвЂ™ is one of them. In looking at cut content, you see a lot of varied reasons as to why they were lost. Meaning that they likely spent so much time and effort pointlessly Americanizing the game that they didnвЂ™t finish translating it. But what we do know is that the localization team was very small, questionably competent, and spent a lot of time redrawing the entire game. The lack of the Snow Queen quest has never been directly addressed by Atlus. That garbage text in the video is actually the game attempting to render a Japanese alphabet that isnвЂ™t present on the disk. It turns out, the quest was only removed via taking away the entrance to the storage room the mask is in by using a cheat device to either warp into the room, or put the mask in your inventory, you can start the quest, which is entirely playable.ДЄs you can see in the video, the Snow Queen quest is in the game, one hundred percent intact in all ways except text. IвЂ™m going to be honest, when researching this one, a subject I was fairly familiar with beforehand, this part surprised me: A quest that you could estimate takes up about a quarter of the gameвЂ™s content, wholly functional in the Japanese release, totally removed from the American. These were minor compared to the greatest issue, though: the Snow Queen quest had vanished.

The translation wasnвЂ™t so hot either, packing at least one famously bad line. The result came out looking a lot less like America, though, and a lot more like an extremely naive and borderline racist depiction of America, right down to making the street punk character black for the purposes of racial equality. The appearances for most party members, as well as the entire city the game took place in, were redone to look more American. But this, their first release outside Japan, wasвЂ¦ not. The Shin Megami Tensei series, and all its spinoffs, were always pretty famously Japanese. The story is loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name (which is also recognizableвЂ“barelyвЂ“as Frozen), which is summarized by the teacher soon before her possession in the questвЂ™s opening cutscene.Д®ven at the time, it stood as clearly obvious that something pretty nuts was going on regarding the American release of Persona. The branching choice takes up about a third of a playthrough, so itвЂ™s a fairly substantial quest. Instead of looking into shady energy company SEBEC, the player would instead be able to collect a mask haunted by the spirit of the Snow Queen, and give it to the protagonistвЂ™s homeroom teacher, who becomes possessed by it the spirit then freezes over the school and attempts to make sacrifices to bring on an eternal night. And it lies in the original Persona title, for the original Playstation.ДЄn alternative route for the main story, thatвЂ™s both harder to access and harder to complete than the base route. Today, weвЂ™re learning about a big reason for both AtlusвЂ™ initial international floundering, and their later strengths.
